Samut Sakhon (Thai: สมุทรสาคร) is one of the central provinces (changwat) of Thailand, established by the Act Establishing Changwat Samut Prakan, Changwat Nonthaburi, Changwat Samut Sakhon and Changwat Nakhon Nayok, Buddhist Era 2489 (1946), which came into force as from March 9, 1946.
Neighboring provinces are (from the southwest clockwise) Samut Songkhram, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom and Bangkok.
Samutsakhon or Mahachai called by the native people living in the area of Tha Chin River 's Delta which is 2 kilometers away from the sea and 30 kilometers from bangkok. This province is originally called "Tha Chin" according to its anciently big district nearby Thai Gulf where had welcomed a lot of foreigners and Chinese people in a respect of a great number of commercial barks docked of their trading purpose; therefore Tha Chin district was generally called. In 2099 B.E., subsequently, in the reign of King Maha Chakkraphat was favored, under his virtue requirements, to build up many new cities where was supposed to be troop mobilization premises prepared for attending the Burma battles. Ban Tha Chin was upgraded to "Sakhonburi" city as the outpost city defending any maritime invasions. Later during King Rama IIII' reigh, he preferred to change Sakhonburi to Samutsakhon city. In King Rama V 's kingdom, he reformed government by organizing official region to Etsapibal County, and he also declared to set up the first Sanitation Division of Thailand at Tha Chalom sub-district in March 18, 244 B.E. In 2456 B.E., King Rama VI had the enacment allowing the official agencies change the title "Muang" to "Province" over the country, consequently Samusakhon city was afterwards called "Samutsakhon" province instead up until naw.
